De Aardling Arthur Dent heeft een slechte dag. Zijn huis staat op het punt met de grond gelijk gemaakt te worden, en hij ontdekt dat zijn beste vriend Ford Prefect afkomstig is van een kleine planeet nabij Betelgeuse. Alsof dit nog niet genoeg is komt hij er achter dat de aarde op het punt staat vernietigd te worden om plaats te maken voor een intergalactische snelweg. Arthur weet samen met Ford net op tijd z'n planeet te verlaten, wat het begin is van een bizarre trektocht door het heelal. Zijn enige houvast: het Intergalactisch Liftershandboek.
